MWC 2019 Portfolio

HMD 2019 Portfolio

The portfolio culmination of our work in 2018 bringing together all our investments in materials, finishes and technology to give high quality devices for multiple markets. Also showing our work on lineage and proposition planning across the products.

Second Wave Phones

Wave 2 Family

HMD 2018 portfolio

2018 portfolio focussed on creating clear product lines and propositions, bringing our products to lower price points, and increasing the value within the existing lines. Metal and high quality build remained a key value point.

Nokia 7 Plus

Nokia 7 Plus

To allow us to meet the agressive pricing and high specification at this price point we developed a new ceramic coating and built on our learnings from previous products that machined back and anodised to reveal valuable metal. This gave fully featured antenna performance using more conventional antenna layouts, and high quality finish at a lower cost than fully machined aluminium body. The nokia 7 plus was one of HMD's most successful devices from awards, and competitiveness.

Nokia 7 Plus

Nokia 6.1

Following the Nokia 6, the 6.1 refined and developed the bold but rugged style, introducing a 2 tone anodise finish, and subtle machined contours around the camera.

Wave 1 Family

HMD Portfolio 2017

The first portfolio developed for HMD, launched at MWC 2017, celebrated Nokia's heritage of high quality materials and reliable build using machined aluminium throughout the portfolio. This was made possible through Foxconn's experience of high end product manufacture.

Nokia 6

Nokia 6

Launched late 2016 initially in china the Nokia 6 was the first of HMD's new android devices. This was designed to showcase a bold, overly reliable, but valuable appearance, with subtle premium trim. Working closely with FIH we developed an invisible antenna solution giving pure uninterupted surfaces.

Feature Family

HMD Feature Family

The complete HMD / Nokia feature phone family as of 2019 created by our small team at HMD.

Nokia 105

Nokia 105

With the success and media weight behind the 3310 we were asked to look at the very low price points for nokia. Even without being able to invest in materials or hardware we were keen to ensure that this product had character and charm, with just a hint of the older products. This device stemmed from a beermat sketch of an "iconified" product.

Nokia 3310

Nokia 3310

Very few phone companies can create a heritage product, and the timings to do so are important. At the launch of HMD we knew this was one of those times, and were able to build on work done over 10 years before to rekindle the nostalgia of Nokias famous 3310 launched in 2000, and selling 150 million pieces.

Premium Slim

Premium Slim

Understanding that not everyone wants or needs a smartphone, a feature phone does not need to be cheap, and even low cost does not need to be cheap looking. This concept aimed to show that with limited extra investment into components and structure found in smartphones, a feature phone could be transformed into a beautiful and desirable device.

Nokia C3 Touch and Type

Nokia C3 Touch and Type

As a design team we were super excited that finally we had a solution to bridge smart and feature phones, removing the legacy of the navi key. C3 T&T was one of the first products to do this. Cased in stainless steel, this was a solid and premium device, which stood the test of time.

Nokia 3710 Fold

Nokia 3710 Fold

Possibly one of the smallest fold phones created by Nokia, extremely compact, and efortless to use. A hidden until lit screen on the outside revealed subtle information behind a patterned panel.

Nokia 3720 Classic

Nokia 3720 Classic

Building on Nokia's reputation for creating reliable phones the 3720 aimed to go a step further. With a stainless steel frame for stiffness, and overt Ip67 sealing the device could survive submersion and impact.

Nokia 3600 Slide

Nokia 3600 Slide

An expressive comfortable and compact device which formed part of Nokia's connect range in 2008 Developed closely with the engineering teams in Germany.

Wrist Wearable

Wrist wearable

The early wrist wearables suffered from poor battery performance, and over specification resulting in low use time, and over complexity. We looked closely at the scenarios where a wrist device offers real benefit to the wearer, and defined a core set of use cases to maximise the battery life and usefulness of the product.

Samsung Washing Machine

Samsung Washing machine

Culminating in a full scale mockup, but unfortunately not to market, this washer visually accentuated its enormous capacity, and offered an extremely simple and intuative interface. The dial on the right offered step by step control and the strip showed exactly what the machine was doing at that point.

Defibrillator Interface

Home Defibrillator

Working directly with the client to design and engineer a defibrillator which could be used reliably at home as a consumer purchased product. We developed the full system along with a simplified 5 step instruction process for use.

Carlton PC Case

Carlton PC Case

Working with Carlton this was their first fully Polycarbonate case, created by large vacuum forming. This resulted in a very durable, stiff and light product which was also visually distinctive. Designed and engineered at Opius Ltd.

Pzizz

Pzizz Power Naps

At a time when MP3 was in its infancy we developed this product which "coached" the user to sleep with suggestion, music and sounds through a selection of music cartridges. Designed, and engineered in house.

Emkay Bluetooth Headset 2

Emkay Bluetooth Headset 2

We were asked to design one of the earlies bluetooth headsets for Emkay. In partnership with Berlin/London we designed and engineered this followup product which was more compact, with a flip cover to end the call and switch off.

Emkay Bluetooth Headset 1

Emkay Bluetooth Headset 2

Bodyzone

Bodyzone

Working with Branson coates architects to assist with the technical delivery of the the bodyzone project. An accurate CAD model was created, and a script developed to divide it into equal 300 mm square lenticular colour changing tiles to gain quantity information. Around 42,000 tiles split into 3 colours were needed to complete the project.
